TRANSCRIPTOMIC METHOD IN DOPING-DETECTION

SUMMARY
The development of sophisticated detection methods helping to prevent the abuse of performance enhancing substances and hence to protect the health of athletes is in progress. In recent years, the development of indirect detection methods has been indicated. By monitoring selected biological markers in athletes longitudinally, regarding population based thresholds, it is possible to indirectly detect diff erences which indicate potential substance abuse. This review describes transcriptomic biomarkers and corresponding analytical methods. The infl uence of doping on the RNA expression profi le has been evaluated in a number of  studies and  potential messenger RNA (mRNA) and microRNA (miRNA) markers have been discovered. In order to determine whether the suggested RNAs can be considered as biomarkers, their qualifi cation needs to be established and must be verifi ed in larger and diff erent populations and under diff erent conditons. Knowledge about the transcriptome, its regulation and function is in its early stages. However, with regard to the fast growing knowledge and the availability of improved detection technologies, novel potential RNA biomarkers will be identifi ed. More labor-intensive validation is needed to check whether these biomarkers could increase the sensitivity of indirect detection approaches, either independently, or in combination with other biomarkers.

Keywords: indirect detection, RNA, prohibited substances and methods, doping in sports.
